[edit] Introduction to "Ways to Save"

Hello and welcome to Energy Camp's official Ways to Save the Earth page. Below, you'll find an index of the many different ways you can save the earth. While Energy Camp's focus is the reduction of energy consumption (particularly with respect to IT), we recognize that many visitors to this wiki will also be interested in learning about other measures they can take to help contribute to the sustainability of the planet. So, in terms of ways to save the Earth, we have no interest in restricting the ideas that you can contribute to just those ideas that have to do with reducing the carbon footprint of information technology.

[edit] Did you have a sustainability epiphany just the other day?

If you're like the rest of the Energy Camp community, then you've probably got at least a couple of wheels in your brain working the sustainability challenge. In Massachusetts for example, grade school students propositioned the state legislature to mandate the use of narrower margins for government printouts. Whitespace in the margins looks nice. But it's a waste of the earth's resources. This is particularly true of the paper industry which is one of the top consumers of both oil and fresh water (in order to produce paper). It's a brilliant idea. It came from kids. And they did the math to justify the change in policy to the state's legislature.

[edit] Now, you don't have to keep that idea in your head

Whether it's an idea on how to run more efficient data centers, reduce the carbon footprint of your own PC, or to be a more efficient recycler (have a better personal recycled material:refuse ratio), it needs to be shared with the world. That's what this wiki is for. Wiki's like this wiki that you're looking at right now make it possible for anyone to record their thoughts and ideas where others can see them. By making this wiki available to everyone with a stake in the earth's sustainability, we can all do our little part (or big part) to make a difference. All you have to do is write that idea into a page on this wiki. For more information on how to add an idea to this wiki, see How to Add your Way to Save.

[edit] About the Ways to Save Listed Below

Below, you'll find a list of ways to save. These ideas are coming from all over the place. For example, there are some great tips and tricks over on the ClimateSaversComputing.org Web site and we're adding many of them to this wiki. Other ideas are coming from ordinary people like me and you. A great many ideas are coming from some of Energy Camp's sponsors. While those ideas don't (and shouldn't) mention the sponsor's solutions as a means to implement the ideas, some ideas are "sponsored ideas." This means that one Energy Camp's sponsors is displayed certain pages as the sponsor of the ideas within. Energy Camp wouldn't be possible without the support of its sponsors and this is a good, non-intrusive way to recognize them for their support.
