Energy Camp Discussion Ideas
Welcome to the Energy Camp Discussion Ideas page!
On this page, you should give people an idea of the unconference discussion(s) you might propose during Energy Camp, to be held Monday, May 18, 2009 in the Las Vegas Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
The final Discussion Grid, as developed by attendees during the event, can be viewed here.
Before adding a discussion topic, be sure to familiarize yourself with how unconferences work. Please see below.
Unconference overview
The Energy Camp unconference will be conducted using Open Space methodology. During the morning of the event, there will be an Unconference General Assembly where attendees will be asked to propose the discussions they're interested in leading. It works like this: attendees write their proposed discussion in magic marker on a piece of paper, line up for their turn at the microphone, propose a discussion and, on a whiteboard that lists all of the available rooms and timeslots in grid fashion, tape their proposed discussion into one of the available room/times.
There are several different rooms and time slots available, which means plenty of opportunity to propose different sessions.
Here's an example of what an unconference grid looks like after it's all filled in:
Principles of Open Space
There are several principles of Open Space:
- Whoever comes are the right people.
- Whatever happens is the only thing that could have.
- Whenever it starts is the right time.
- When it is over, it is over.
- Document your session on the wiki.
In addition, Open Space methodology subscribes to the Law of Two Feet:
Law of Two Feet: If during the course of the gathering, any person finds themselves in a situation where they are neither learning from nor contributing to the discussion, they should use their two feet and go to a more productive place.
Proposed discussions
Please copy the format used by one of the entries below to create a new entry.
Below is a list of proposed discussions for the Energy Camp unconference. If no discussions appear yet, feel free to start the list.
At the end of each description should be a link to a detail level page where you can get more information, indicate your interest in attending the discussion, and flesh out the topic in more detail with other attendees. If you are one of the people who proposed a topic, feel free to start the detail level page associated with that topic and get the conversation going!.

Help! My Company is an Environmental Nightmare!
Do the people at your company print out email? Does your boss not understand the meaning of the word "duplex"? Do your suggestions to reduce energy consumption remain unheard over the sound of cooling fans? There are many companies who have started to become green from the bottom up. What is the best way to start a green movement at a company that doesn't give a darn?

Are Companies Ready to Consider Some 'Crazy' Ideas to Improve Data Center Energy Efficiency?
We (Cassatt) just published a survey that said 59% of respondents (IT & facilities folks) would consider turning off servers when they are idle. This gave us some hope that people are willing to put aside conventional wisdom and standard IT operating procedure to deal with energy efficiency issues. Are others seeing this sort of interest and flexibility, and how do you best make the case to management to do something a little out of the ordinary? Pure ROI? 'Green' appeal? What other 'crazy' ideas are worth considering?
